We’ve seen Reekado Banks prove his mettle and justify his being awarded Next Rated Artist at the Headies 2015 Awards.
The singer has had an eventful 2016 thus far, going on international tours, headlining concerts, getting featured on other artistes’ records such as Pheelz’ ‘Honey’ and Jaywon’s ‘Gbadun’ amongst others and putting out his own material– his latest being ‘Standard’.
Reekado plans to drop his debut album to be titled “Oluwa ni” later this year, an 18-tracker that would feature local as well as international acts, and hopefully further justify his precious next rated conferment.
Moving on, this article aims to dig into likely successors of Reekado Banks as this Year’s Headies 2016 Next Rated star judging by their effort and impact in the year so far.
This gifted rapper has been quite impressive so far, ever since he got discovered by Davido, with his Fela inspired Panda instrumental laced song titled ‘Fela’. Showing class, wordplay, a unique flow and witty punchlines, as evident in his verses in ‘Fela’, ‘Ojere’, and group song ‘Back to back’ the Davido Worldwide Music (DMW) act is a breath of fresh air for rap music in Nigeria. If he keeps this consistency on, he just might be smiling home with a brand new ride, honor and a plaque well deserving of a Next Rated winner.
This is another rap phenomenon that has taken the music industry by storm, with his hit songs ‘Alhaji’, and ‘Jagaban’. Winning Rookie of the Year 2015, the rapper can now be said to have overgrown that title, and may follow the footsteps of Reekado Banks who was Headies Rookie of The Year in 2014 and went on to win the Next Rated Award at the Headies 2015. Ycee has released other singles following ‘Alhaji’, such as ‘Sumi’ and ‘Fearless’, though these songs have turned out not to be hits given the reception and airplay they’ve been getting which is a stark contrast to ‘Jagaban’ and ‘Alhaji’. In many ways, he stands tall with Dremo in the rap game, and will have to put in more work and not rely on his antecedence to hand him that Next Rated award and edge out a budding rapper like Dremo. Safe to say Ycee’s damn well capable of taking it (the award) home but he has his work cut out to make that happen.
Another Davido newly signed act Mayorkun could be a potential Headies 2016 next rated nominee and winner if he keeps his game tight. No doubt he has what it takes seeing his performance in ‘Eleko’ his breakout debut single and his newly released fire branded ‘Yawa’, which has been met with controversy over the incredible number of views it received on Youtube within minutes of being released on the platform. Take nothing away from the song, Mayorkun delivers some catchy hooks on the melodious tune leaving it a memorable one. More of such catchy songs before the end of the year and the DMW artiste may just be the talk of the town come year end.
Chocolate City Afro Highlife and Pop singer Koker has been sort of a revelation, with his energetic catchy party anthem ‘Do something’ released in 2015 to ‘Kolewerk’ in 2016 with some songs in between, the bubbling singer and songwriter is one to watch out closely this year. Having worked with Olamide, for ‘Kolewerk’ remix, buzzing at the moment, his label boss M.I, comic rapper Falz, and a host of others, Koker has what it takes to win over the fans for the Next Rated Act if he steps his game up keeping it consistent by releasing more popping songs from that creative mind of his.
The Drumroll Records act has been all shades of amazing from her time at Project Fame West Africa music competition running up till now. The singer broke out with a hit party single ‘Ibadi’ which got raved reviews and earned her a Most Promising Act to watch nod at the 2015 Nigerian Entertainment Awards show. That closely was followed by a string of singles including another well received ‘Soke’ still in 2015. Moving on to 2016, the Afro-House singer as she describes herself dropped a mix of mushy, dance and sensual songs in ‘Akara Oyibo’, ‘Shaba’ and ‘Jéte’.
The gifted songstress has gone on to collaborate with local and African acts’ music such as in the song ‘Mbilo Mbilo’ by BET Award winning Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo and the love duet ‘Start all over’ featuring Afro fusion, rock and folk singer Johnny Drille.
Niniola has unsurprisingly been nominated as Best New Act at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards 2016 coming up in September 2016. Yet to drop an album and with such potency and promise, The Headies Next Rated Artist 2016 is hers for the taking.
